Overview

Grootberg Primary School is a small, rural school in the Erwee Village, located in the Khoadi Hoas Conservancy.  The Conservation Travel Foundation has supported the school with funds donated by Ultimate Safaris guests who have visited it, since 2012.  These contributions include:

Bursary Scheme : CTF have engaged with a number of private donors to sponsor an annual bursary for a child from this area with high academic ability to attend a school in Windhoek. One scholar is currently supported, and other potential candidates are under consideration

Blanket and mattresses :  A number of children stay in the school hostel during term, and the school needs a regular supply of a mattresses and blankets. The Foundation regularly assists by arranging for the delivery of large numbers of mattresses and blankets annually - again funded by Ultimate Safaris guests.

Citrus plantation  : Ten years ago CTF sponsored a citrus plantation at the school as there was sufficient water for the orchard to be viable. The fresh fruit and vegetables provide vital supplements for the children.

Computer Centre : CTF donated a state-of-the-art computer centre to the school in 2010. Rural primary school scholars need exposure to computers and computer technology before advancing to secondary school. Grootberg Primary School provided the classroom to house the Computer Centre, and the Conservation Travel Foundation provided the computer equipment and technical support for the installation. Since August 2012 the school has had a qualified US Peace Corps volunteer teaching basic computer skills.

Crockery and cutlery : There is a constant need for crockery and cutlery at the school boarding facility. The Government rural education authorities provide limited support to the Hostel, so the Foundation regularly provides crockery and cutlery, and similar items, also purchased with donations from Ultimate Safaris guests who have visited the school.

Volunteer Program : The Conservation Travel Foundation set up a volunteer program; built volunteer accommodation, and focused volunteer activity on teaching English language, computer skills, and extramural activities, especially team sports. The volunteer program is not subsidised, and volunteers need to cover many of their own living costs, and make a pre-set financial contribution to the school. The Foundation does not take any payment for their own part in the programme.
